The death of Bram Zeegers, key witness in the trial of suspected gang boss Willem Holleeder, remains shrouded in mystery on Wednesday morning, with no clear cause of death.

Former lawyer Zeegers (58), was found dead in the bath of his south Amsterdam home in the early hours of Tuesday.
The Volkskrant suggests that Zeegers may have died from taking contaminated cocaine and says the public prosecution department is considering all the scenarios – accident, suicide and murder. So far, the police will only say he died under ‘suspicious circumstances’.
The Zeegers’ family lawyer Jurjen Pen told the Telegraaf he did not believe there was a motive for murder. It is also very unlikely that he was killed by a cocaine overdose. ‘Zeegers did not smoke or drink, he did a lot of sport and seemed to be happy in himself,’ Pen told the paper. ‘I really don’t understand it.’
Zeegers was legal advisor to Willem Endstra, one of the four property magnates Holleeder is accused of blackmailing. Endstra was shot dead in 2004.
The prosecution department says Zeegers’ death does not affect the statements he has already made at the trial. Last week he gave evidence in court, saying that Endstra knew he was in a hopeless situation because of the blackmail campaign against him.
The Telegraaf points out that four key witnesses in the Holleeder blackmail trial are now dead. Kees Houtman, a property dealer whom Holleeder was also accused of blackmailing, was killed in 2005 and key witness Thomas van der Bijl was shot dead outside the bar he owned in 2006.
