NATO chief: stay in Afghanistan

Wednesday 19 September 2007

NATO secretary general and former Dutch foreign minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer says in an interview with Wednesday’s NRC that none of the countries serving with the NATO mission in Afghanistan will pull out.

‘No-one can leave and no-one is going to leave,’ he told the paper. ‘And I cannot imagine the Netherlands pulling out on its own,’ De Hoop Scheffer said.

The Netherlands still has to decide whether to extend its contribution past August 2008. Germany has already decided to stay, ANP reported.
