While 55% of primary school children cycled to school 10 years ago, the figure has now fallen to 40%, says research by traffic safety group VVN.

In a survey of 1,300 primary schools, almost 75% said that parents are contributing to traffic chaos around schools by bringing and picking up their children by car.
