Wilders calls for Koran to be banned

Wednesday 08 August 2007

Geert Wilders, the controversial leader of the anti-immigration PVV party, has called for a ban on the Koran in the Netherlands. The Islamic holy book is, he says ‘Fascist’, ‘wretched’ and encourages violence. He wants the book banned from shops, homes and mosques.

In a letter published in today’s Volkskrant, Wilders compares the Koran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf and points out that this book has been banned since the end of the Second World War.

A ban on the Koran would be a clear signal to Islamists which use the book as an ‘excuse and inspiration’ for violence, says Wilders.

Wilders’ comments are prompted by an attack on the chairman of the ex-Muslims committee and Labour councillor Ehsan Jami at the weekend. The anti-terrorist coordinator this week ordered extra protection for Jami.

The Volkskrant puts Wilders’ call for a ban on the Koran on its front page but in its editorial column it suggests that PVV leader has gone too far and questions whether he can still be taken seriously.

The paper says Wilders’ call to ban the Koran from mosques would take away the right of a million Dutch Muslims to freely practice their religion. This contravenes the Dutch constitution and would reduce Muslims to second-class citizens – something that goes against the grain of the Christian-humanist traditions on which Wilders’ bases his call, the paper adds.

The call for a ban on the Koran is the latest in a series of anti-Muslim campaigns launched by Wilders which always generate widespread publicity. However, even Wilders admits that his latest proposal, like previous ones, is unlikely to get support from other parties.

The PVV has nine MPs.

Wilders must be very pleased with all that free publicity.

Before he calls on a ban of the Koran, perhaps he should hand in his copy of Mein Kampf.

BTW, PVV has 9 MPs and according to the NRC Handelsblad, one party member. Wilders himself.

Imagine Wilders singing "Me, myself and I" after his election victory.

I'd like to see religion fade away, but this kind of thing will only strengthen the religious extremists within the muslim community, because they will be able to portray the country as "dar-ul-harb" (enemy territory).

what is wrong with this man .. i am 100% sure he has never read the book in a first place, and i am sure that he is paid good money to do such thing.

By banning Koran, Wilders has made himself a "Fascist" too. He is sick man.

really bad. next thing we know, they'll be building new concentration camps and starting a holocaust. might as well take Hitler's DNA and make a clone. I'm sure old Geert here and he would make best friends. ffs

Wilders is 100% right, quran should be banned in all civilized nations as it incites murder, terrorism and kamikaze tactics. Islam is not religion; it is a movement to conquer the world, a lot more dangerous than Mein Kampf, fascism, nazism or communism.

In general Dutch politicians don't understand anything about Islam. Ellen Vogelaar, minister of Integration is the best example of this.

The USA was right in forbidding Tariq Ramadan from teaching there and what do the Dutch do? They invite this Muslim Brother to teach at the university in Rotterdam. Incredible!

I can fully understand Geert Wilders why he is behaving like he does, why he says what he says. Nevertheless he says it in the wrong way and proposes the wrong method.

Wilders is right. The Koran clearly constitutes "hate speech," and we know what European nations can do to those convicted of "hate speech."
