No agreement yet on budget

Late-night talks on Wednesday between ministers failed to produce agreement on next year’s budget plans, news agency ANP reports.

Sources told ANP that the delay is due to the complexity of measures being proposed rather than conflicts between ministers. However, it is known that ChristenUnie ministers are not happy with plans to reduce tax breaks for non-working women.
In particular, the cabinet wants to ensure that poorer pensioners and people on minimum incomes are not worse off next year. Most people will have less to spend.
Agreement on the government’s spending plans for 2008 are now not expected before Friday, sources close to the talks told ANP.
The budget will be presented on September 18.
