Zoo not prosecuted over gorilla escape

Rotterdam’s Blijdorp zoo will not face legal action for the escape of gorilla Bokito in May, the city’s public prosecution (OM) department said on Monday.

A local family made a formal complaint to police claiming the zoo had not taken due precautions to prevent the breakout of a dangerous animal. The family is to appeal.
The OM said investigations indicate Blijdorp had fulfilled all legal obligations for keeping dangerous animals and that Bokito’s escape was partly due to the behaviour of one or more visitors to the zoo.
