Shop workers not safe enough
Tuesday 24 July 2007
Nearly half of shops in areas with high rates of aggression, violence and robberies are not doing enough to protect their staff, according to government inspectors.
Inspectors, who looked at 733 stores, found that workers are not being trained in how to deal with aggressive customers. In addition, many shops had poor sight lines or kept too much cash in the till. Staff entrances were badly lit and back doors often left open, allowing unauthorised people to slip in unnoticed.
A spokesman for the inspectorate told ANP on Tuesday that inspectors had revisited the stores as often as necessary to ensure improvements were made.
The FNV union is pleased with the results of the investigation. 'A safe environment is essential for workers and customers,' a spokesman told ANP.
