A wall along the water-filled ditch with observation windows and steeper sides for the ditch itself are among the measures being considered to keep the gorillas in their enclosure, Blijdorp zoo in Rotterdam announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

The measures follow last week’s escape by a 180 kilo silverback called Bokito who seriously injured a woman and caused widespread panic. Zoo officials believe the gorilla may have been provoked by the woman staring at him and by children throwing stones.
For now, the gorillas are being kept indoors where the distance between the public and the gorillas will be increased from 20 centimetres to 1.20 metres. Parts of the glass wall may also be replaced with mirrored glass so the gorillas can’t see the people.
Yvonne de Horde, who was bitten dozens of times and has a broken arm, is suing the zoo for damages. A further case is being brought by a Rotterdam family who allege their 3-year-old son is suffering from panic attacks.
