Graveyards enter digital age

In recent years the rise of weblogs and online photo albums has been changing the way we share our lives, points out the Financieele Dagblad on Thursday – and increasingly, our deaths too.

Now the traditional funeral industry is taking its own step towards multimedia representation with the unveiling of the first digital headstone at a cemetery in Rhenen.
The headstone incorporates a screen on which film clips and photos of the dearly departed can be shown as a ‘living memory’, says Johan Rijksen, director of Rijtink stonemasonry which is producing the headstones.
The product was thought up by Henk Rozema, who put together a DVD of his life last year to show at his 65th birthday party. When friends and family asked for a copy ‘for later’, the idea came to him.
The images can only be accessed by family and friends equipped with a special battery or a remote control.
