Military police officers have reported a number of ‘human rights abuses’ by marines in southern Iraq to the government committee investigating torture allegations, the Volkskrant reported on Friday.

The paper said around 100 Iraqi prisoners were kept blindfolded without food or water for a full day in October 2003. In some cases, the plastic handcuffs were put on so tightly the men’s blood could not circulate properly.
The paper says the men – 96 in total, including an American and Dutch tourist – were picked up in a raid on a sheep market on suspicion of weapons trading.
Allegations of torture by the Dutch military in Iraq first surfaced in the Volkskrant last year.
The paper said prisoners were doused with water to keep them awake and subjected to loud music. Earlier this week the paper said one prisoner had complained about being tortured with an electric prod.
