Café and bars face massive staff shortage

The Netherlands’ hotels, bars and restaurants are crying out for seasonal staff, according to the Telegraaf today. The paper says the sector needs 54,000 new employees straight away – equivalent to 33% of the workforce.

The main reasons vacancies are not being filled is the poor image of catering industry jobs and inadequate training, the paper says.
Leo van Eeghen of the hotel and catering sector organisation KHN tells the paper that the staff shortage is putting a lot of pressure on existing workers. Some 350,000 people currently work in the country’s 44,000 catering establishments and hotels.
