Five arrested for internet 'Nigerian' fraud

Wednesday 25 April 2007

Police have arrested five West Africans in connection with an international investigation into internet fraud, known as the Nigerian 419 scam.

The scheme involves conning people by email into paying over large sums of money in return for a share in a non-existent inheritance or lottery prize.

The investigation also involved the US postal authorities; a large number of the victims were in the US. In February 2006, the Dutch authorities arrested 11 people on similar charges, several of whom face extradition to the US.

How come people still fall for this? And if they do, it's their own stupid fault. I've had these mails about inheritances, about lotteries, about unclaimed bank accounts... they've belonged to dead relations of dictators, people who died in plane crashes, crafty bank staff.... but it's just so hard to believe there are folks out there who think these mails are genuine.

It amazes me how people still believe that these scams are legit. Common sense isn't so common anymore, but I just don't understand how anyone could believe they are special enough to inherit some dead country leader's estate costs or a lottery that they never even played. These scams are run so rampant that I would really think even if people aren't educated on the matter, that they would have at least heard about them.

I agree with Steve Lomax. Knowing that there are so many different types of fraud out there people should be extra suspicious of something if it doesn't sound right. It's their own fault if they get suckered.

One would have thought by now the 419 scam would not be an issue, but surprisingly, some people are still falling for it.

This shows that those people would also commit a crime if they are offered the opportunity. They should be prosecuted as well.

As a Nigerian, I still believe that this is being encouraged by so many people falling for it so many times.
