AZ move into top spot with one game to go

Alkmaar AZ moved into the lead of the premier league on Sunday, after beating SC Heerenveen 3-1. Eindhoven PSV who have led the league since the winter break slipped to third place after drawing 1-1away to FC Utrecht.

Second-placed Ajax (Amsterdam) overran Sparta of Rotterdam 5-2. All three teams have the same number of points but AZ has a superior goal difference.
With one game to go to the end of the season, AZ look set to clinch their first premier league championship since 1981. Their last game is against lowly placed Excelsior of Rotterdam.
But AZ manager Louis van Gaal warned against complacency. ‘We haven’t won it yet,’ he told the Telegraaf . ‘We are now the league leaders and that puts under extra pressure.’
Ajax manager Henk ten Cate believes his team will still win the league. ‘I say what I feel and I feel we will be lifting the trophy next Sunday,’ Ten Cate said. He must be counting on AZ dropping points because the goal difference between the two clubs is huge.
Ajax would have to score six goals more than AZ if both teams win their last game.
PSV manager Ronald Koeman said his team had ‘given away’ the game on Sunday. PSV have frittered away 12 points in the past few weeks. They have only an outside chance of winning their third consecutive championship.
At the bottom of the league, ADO of The Hague – who are already relegated – are likely face sanctions from the football association after their game against Groningen was suspended in the 49 th minute because fans repeatedly threw fireworks onto the pitch.
