Lucky win for Holland against Slovenia

The Dutch national soccer team moved a step closer to qualification for next year’s European Championship, after nicking a 1-0 away victory against Slovenia on Wednesday evening.

Having missed a number of chances, the Dutch were increasingly losing their grip on the game in the last quarter until defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst popped up to score in the 85th minute with a shot that was deflected twice before it entered the Slovenian goal.
Dutch coach Marco van Basten had hoped for a convincing win with lots of goals after his team’s dreadful 0-0 draw at home to Romania at the weekend.
The Dutch played with more conviction and power, but squandered a number of chances in both halves. The Slovenians meanwhile were solid in defence and looked dangerous on the break.
The three points from the victory keeps Holland firmly at the top of their qualifying group. And it takes the pressure of Van Basten who has been criticised for trying out to many different players which, in the eyes of the critics, has led to the team’s recent lacklustre performances.
