Councils urged to crack down on fireworks

The justice ministry has called on local councils to carry out tighter control on the illegal firework trade (the Dutch traditionally let off fireworks on New Year’s Eve). According to media reports, 123,000 tonnes of illegal fireworks were confiscated in 2005. This year 124,000 tonnes has already been seized and the police expect this to rise 150,000 tonnes.
