Value-added tax, or belasting over toegevoegde waarde, was introduced in the Netherlands in January 1969 and has since grown into the most important source of tax revenue for the government. Btw now accounts for over 30% of treasury tax income. The Netherlands has two rates, 6% for culturally-related events, books and sport and 21% for everything else.
