Balkenede-norm

This term comes from government efforts to keep a lid on civil service and public sector pay. Since 2005, government departments and organisations have had to list who earns more than prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende’s salary – the so-called Balkenende standard, set at €181,000 in 2009. Dozens of civil servants are better paid.
