Our Taliban
Wednesday 24 February 2010
Geert Wilders' Freedom Party is the Taliban of the Netherlands, writes John Feffer on the Huffington Post.
The Dutch government is the latest casualty of the Afghanistan War. Over the weekend, the Labor Party in the Netherlands walked out of the ruling coalition government to protest the extension of the Dutch deployment in Afghanistan.
The Taliban is rejoicing.
Oh, perhaps you thought I meant the Taliban in Afghanistan. No, I meant the Taliban in the Netherlands. You didn't know there was a Dutch Taliban? It goes by a different name, you see. It's the Freedom Party, and it's poised to become a top vote-getter in the elections that will follow in the wake of the ruling coalition's collapse.

First time I've ever seen the Huffington Post quoted. It's known as an extreme left-wing propaganda rag by most. I am however confused by two things. The comparison of PVV to the Taliban is interesting. Most on this site seem to think the PVV is extremely dangerous, and therefore the comparison would be that the Taliban are too. And yet the Taliban obviously are not seen as a threat to The Netherlands, as evidenced by the desire to pull out the troops? Also, nearly every article on this site act as though the Dutch are disgusted with the PVV and what they stand for, and yet if they are elected into a majority of seats, it is the people of The Netherlands that put them there. You can't keep screaming about how Democracy has spoken and Dutch troops should pull out of Afghanistan, without also accepting the legitimacy of the PVV - if elected.
