US embassy to get monument status

The US embassy building in the Hague will be placed on the official listed building register when the embassy moves to its new location in Wassenaar in several years time.

The city council’s executive board voted on Tuesday night to keep the building, despite many calls for its demolition. The 50-year-old building by US-based Hungarian designer Marcel Breuer is considered by experts to be of great architectural and historical significance, while opponents say it is an eyesore.
Once the embassy moves out, the building may become a modern art museum, hotel or a restaurant, Trouw reported.
