Sven Kramer wins gold in the 5,000 metres – for third time in a row
Speed skater Sven Kramer successfully defended his 5,000 metre Olympic title for the second time on Sunday, winning the race in a new Olympic record of 6.09.76.
The silver went to Canada’s Ted-Jan Bloemen, who had an undistinguished career in speed skating in the Netherlands before moving to Canada in 2014. Norway’s Sverre Lunde Pedersen picked up the bronze.
Kramer took his first 5,000 metres medal – the silver – 12 years ago in Turin, won gold in Vancouver and again in Sochi. A delighted Kramer, 31, told broadcaster NOS after Sunday’s race: ‘I’m glad it happened again.’
Kramer is also competing in the 10,000 metres later in the games – an Olympic title which has yet eluded him.
