Dutch brewer Heineken plans to go greener as earnings soar

Heineken remains the Dutch student’s favourite potential employer

Long known for its green packaging, Heineken is planning to take going green a step further. The Amsterdam-based brewer said it wants at least 70% of the energy it uses in its breweries in more than 70 countries worldwide to come from sustainable sources within 12 years, the Parool reported on Monday.

In addition, Heineken will step up the production of biogas in the brewing process. The glass used in bottles and the cans will also be produced by greener methods.

At present 14% of the energy used in the brewing process comes from sustainable sources and Heineken says it now produces 29% of its electricity needs using sustainable methods. Green energy and heat from production of biogas will reduce the emissions of CO2 by 80% by 2030, the company said.

Heineken posted 2017 net profit of €1.9bn, a 25.5% gain over the previous year, the company said on Monday. Sales totalled €21.8bn.
