Television presenter turned politician Sylvana Simons has put together a heavyweight line-up to fight the local elections in Amsterdam.

Simons, who founded fledgling party BIJ1 after quitting Denk last year, has signed up documentary maker Sunny Bergman, former SP senator Anja Meulenbelt and prize-winning anthropologist Gloria Wekker to her list of potential candidates.

Others on the list include Marjan Sax, one of the founders of the Mama Cash micro-financing organisation, and transgender rights campaigner Ana Paula Lima.

BIJ1 – literally, with one – says it is a party for ‘radical equality and economic justice’. Simons herself will lead the campaign for the March 21 vote and hopes to win at least two seats on the city council.
