Heavy fog has caused disruption to traffic across most of the Netherlands on Tuesday morning, transport agencies have warned.

Flights from Eindhoven Airport have been grounded until at least 11am because of the weather, while some incoming services have been diverted to Maastricht or Weeze.

Meteorological office KNMI issued a code yellow warning for all provinces except for Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel and Limburg as visibility was reduced to 70m in places.

The A7 motorway was closed at Purmerend-Noord in the southbound direction, towards Amsterdam, following an accident, while drivers in Brabant were warned to expect delays on the A58 after a four-car collision.

Motoring organisation ANWB measured total tailbacks of 750km at 8am, making it one of the busiest morning rush-hours of the autumn so far.

Schiphol airport said no flights had been cancelled so far, but warned of a ‘domino effect’ later in the day if inbound planes are held up by fog in other parts of Europe.

The fog is expected to clear in most places by mid-morning, after which temperatures will rise to around 9C.
