The photos of eight criminals on the run have been put up at three Dutch airports so tourists can keep an eye out at their holiday destinations.

The men, who have all been sentenced to four years or more in jail for crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder, are thought to be abroad. By asking travellers to be on the lookout for them, police and the prosecution office hope to track down their whereabouts.

It is sometimes complicated to go after criminals who have fled abroad, police said. Some countries have different statutes of limitations, or have no extradition treaty with the Netherlands.

‘No one can hide forever and we won’t stop looking,’ said police officer Andy Kraag, from the national crime squad’s FASTNL unit. ‘We will continue to go after them using new methods. We will do everything that is necessary, so they had better hand themselves in to finish their sentences.’

FASTNL is tasked with finding wanted criminals who have at least 300 days left of their sentence or owe more than €10,000 in fines.

The photos of the criminals have been put up at Schiphol, Eindhoven and Rotterdam airports where they will stay until July 31.
