A 19-year-old Dutchman has been arrested in the Netherlands in connection with the death of a resident of Belgium, who was thrown into a canal in Ghent at the weekend and died.

Belgian’s public prosecution department has requested the extradition of the Dutch suspect and a second man who was involved in the incident is still being sought.

Surveillance camera footage shows how the 53-year-old victim, a Ugandan national and father of two who lives in Belgium, was grabbed by his hands and feet and thrown from the Lousbergs bridge in the city centre at around 8am on Sunday morning.

According to Belgian media, the suspects ran off when their victim did not float to the surface. Eyewitnesses called the emergency services who pulled the man out of the water, but he was declared dead at the scene.
