A piece of land in Amstelveen, deemed by Supreme Court judges to be too noisy for students because it is on Schiphol flight routes, is set to be used instead to house 40 to 60 Ukrainian refugees, the Parool reported on Thursday.

Last month Supreme Court judges said that plans to build accommodation for 4,000 students could not go ahead because of the noise problems, even though the location is next to part of the university campus.

But the noise rules don’t apply to refugee accommodation. Now the owners of part of the land have submitted applications to place container dwellings there for Ukrainians who have fled their country because of the Russian invasion.

Amstelveen mayor Tjapko Poppens said he does not expect any problems with granting permission but that it will first check with government inspectors.
