Rents in the social housing sector will rise by an average of 2% from July 1, below the level of inflation.
A survey by sector organisation Aedes found that 63% of social landlords had kept the increases below the legal maximum of 2.3%.
The limit is calculated on the basis of the previous year’s inflation. Usually social landlords can raise rents by up to 1% above the rate of inflation, but the government scrapped this provision at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Housing corporations can raise rents for higher earners by a maximum of €100 per month extra, as long as the total amount is within the limit for social housing of €763.47 per month.
Aedes surveyed 169 housing corporations in April on their rates for 2022.
