Electric bike sales outstripped the sale of than new, traditional bicycles for the first time last year, road users organisations RAI Vereniging and BOVAG said on Thursday.

Cyclists bought over 900,000 new bikes last year, of which 52% were electric, the associations said. In addition, a further 400,000 second-hand bikes changed hands.

But bike sales were down overall because of problems in the supply chain, the associations said, dipping under one million for the first time since 2017. The number of new bikes sold fell by 16% year on year, with e-bike sales going down 12%.

The average cost of a new bike was just over €1,600, while an e-bike cost just under €2,400. In total, the Dutch spent €1.5 bn on new bikes last year plus €177 mn on second hand two-wheelers.
