At least 150,000 homes which are scheduled to be built in the coming years will have problems with aircraft noise because of their proximity to Schiphol airport, according to environmental organisations.

They say housing at at least 115 locations within 40 kilometres of Schiphol will break World Health Organisation standards for aircraft noise when it is built.

The areas range from Heiloo in the north of Noord Holland province to Katwijk in the south. Most of the houses which will have problems are located within the greater Amsterdam area, but Haarlemmermeer and Zaanstad also have a large number of planned homes within the noise zone.

The organisations behind the report are now calling on local councils to put pressure on national government to force Schiphol to slash noise pollution. In effect, this would mean fewer flights.

The government is scheduled to publish its strategy for the future of the aviation sector this year.
