Dutch railway company NS is resuming its pre-pandemic level of service from Monday, but night trains outside the main urban areas will not restart until July 5.

The move is an ‘important moment’ says NS director Marjan Rintel, because it marks the end of a difficult period for both personnel and travellers.

The government had called on people to avoid public transport unless strictly necessary, but dropped that plea last month. Since then, passenger numbers have risen to some 40% of pre-pandemic levels during the week and 60% at weekends.

Another indication that travel use is returning to normal is a ‘slight increase’ in the number of people activating their season tickets, NS said.
