Oranje captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed he will miss this summer’s European football championships while he recovers from a serious knee injury.

Liverpool defender Van Dijk said in an interview that he had decided not to take part in the competition.

‘My recovery is going well, but I had to take a decision,’ he said. ‘I have to accept it. This is how things are and I think this is the right decision, given the busy schedule.’

Oranje coach Frank de Boer said in March that he was not counting on Van Dijk to lead the Dutch into the championships. Oranje kick off their campaign against Ukraine in Amsterdam on June 13.

Van Dijk, 29, was seriously injured in last October’s Merseyside derby against Everton.
