Firefighters spent eight hours on Sunday trying to rescue 16 cows who became trapped in a manure pit.

Four of the animals died after the floor of their cowshed in the Limburg village of Lemiers collapsed, plunging them into the pit, De Limburger reported.

The others were driven to the entrance of the pit before being strapped into a harness and lifted out by crane.

A spokesman for the Zuid-Limburg regional safety council said it was not known what caused the floor to give way.
