Ajax have been left with everything to play for after losing 1-0 to Liverpool in their penultimate Champions League group match.

Liverpool earned qualification and top spot in Group D courtesy of a neat finish from Curtis Jones after André Onana misjudged a cross. The Liverpool win put an end to Ajax’ run of 17 away Champions League matches without conceding a defeat.

In the other Group D match, Atalanta and Midtjylland drew, putting the Italians into second place with eight points and all the pressure on next week’s final game against Ajax.

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag told broadcaster NOS after the match that the loss had been ‘unnecessary’. Ajax must step up its game to win this sort of match in the Champions League, he said. ‘I watched two teams in balance. It is the details that decide.’
