Train services are being reduced on several commuter lines from Monday as fewer passengers are travelling because of coronavirus restrictions.

Fewer peak-hour trains will run to cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Groningen and Veenendaal, while night services are being reduced from Utrecht to Nijmegen, Amersfoort and Eindhoven, and between Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

Rail operator NS said the changes were the result of falling demand since workers were asked to stay at home if possible to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections. Passenger numbers are currently at around 30% of their normal level.

NS said 90% of services were still running and at least two trains an hour would continue to operate on all its main routes.

‘NS wants to ensure that passengers can continue to travel responsibly and safely during the coronavirus period and that the Netherlands remains accessible,’ the company said in a statement.
