VVD consolidates lead in latest poll of polls, Forum sinks further away

Prime minister Mark Rutte’s right-wing Liberal VVD remains by far the biggest party in the latest poll of polls, an amalgam of three leading opinion polls.

If there were a general election tomorrow the VVD would win 39 to 45 seats in the 150 seat parliament, double that of its nearest rival, the far right PVV lead by Geert Wilders, which is on 18 to 22 seats.

Translated into percentages, the VVD has the support of up to 28% of the electorate and the PVV 11%, which is down slightly on its performance in the 2017 general election.

D66, which has recently elected trade minister Sigrid Kaag as its new leader, is on 9.6%, the Christian Democrats, who now have health minister Hugo de Jonge as leader, are on 10%, GroenLinks is on 9.7% and Labour on 9.6%.

The poll also highlights the further demise in popularity of Thierry Baudet’s far right Forum voor Democratie, which would win five seats if there was a general election tomorrow and can count on 5% support.

The party was the biggest at last year’s provincial elections and had high hopes of breaking through nationally in March next year.

Research bureau Kantar says that the party has been particularly hard hit by its approach to the coronavirus epidemic, highlighting Baudet’s association with discredited conspiracy theorists as a major problem.
