AZ of Alkmaar have qualified for the third preliminary round of this season’s Champions League competition after a 3-1 win over Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic.

Subsitute Albert Gudmundsson put away two goals in extra time, to seal the third round entry and automatic placement in the Europa League.

The next match in the club’s European campaign will be against Benfica, Dinamo Kiev or AA Gent in mid September. The draw will take place on August 31.

The winner of that match will move into the play offs for the final Champions League positions, while the loser heads for the Europa League.

Ajax, declared Eredivisie winners after the season was abandoned because of corona virus, will take part directly in the Champions League group stage.
