Most work-related deaths are in the building sector: inspectors

New housing under construction in Amsterdam

In total 69 people died in industrial accidents in the Netherlands last year, two fewer than in 2018, according to a new report by social affairs ministry inspectors.

The number of work-related accidents reported to the inspectorate rose by over 100, reaching 4,474 by the end of the year.

Most deaths occurred in the construction sector. Youngsters and the over 55s were most likely to be injured.

‘Last year, more than one person a week was killed in an accident at work and thousands of others are injured,’ chief inspector Marc Kuipers said in a statement. ‘We must keep emphasising that safety is paramount.’

The agency will continue to take a tough line on providing information and on carrying out inspections, Kuipers said.
