Rotterdam football club Feyenoord beat Heerenveen 0-1 on Thursday night to clinch the last place in the semi-finals of this season’s KNVB Cup competition.

The players wore special shirts in honour of former player and the club’s equipment chief Carlo de Leeuw, who died of cancer on Thursday. ‘It was a difficult day for us,’ Leroy Fer, who scored the winning goal, said after the game.

The Rotterdammers will meet NAC of Breda at home in March in their bid for a final place. First division side NAC put out Eredivisie title hopefuls AZ in a shock 1-3 win on Wednesday evening.

The other semi-final is between current title holders Ajax and FC Utrecht.
