Nine people were arrested and police handed out 106 fines to farmers taking part in Wednesday’s demonstration in The Hague.

The fines were mainly given to farmers who persisted in driving their tractors on the highways, even though police and the demonstration organisers had warned them this would be illegal.

Jeroen van Maanen, a spokesman for the Farmers Defence Force which organised the demonstration, said it had passed off ‘perfectly’ and disruption for ordinary citizens had been kept to a minimum.

Several thousand farmers took part in the protests in the centre of The Hague. They say farmers are being unfairly targeted in efforts to cut pollution.
