A survivor of last March’s fatal shooting on a tram in Utrecht has asked a judge to order police to hand over CCTV footage of the incident.

The unnamed victim is seeking to prove that Gökmen Tanis targeted him specifically during the shooting on March 18 and should be charged with attempted murder.

Tanis, 37, is accused of threatening to kill the man, along with four charges of murder or manslaughter relating to the passengers who died in the shooting.

The district court in The Hague has scheduled an accelerated an injunction hearing for the victim’s claim against the prosecution service and tram operator Qbuzz, who have refused to release the images.

The man says the pictures show Tanis aiming his gun at him and pulling the trigger several times, only for the weapon to misfire. He then fled the tram.

The victim’s legal adviser, Karim Aachboun, said in a written submission to the court that he wanted the judge to intervene. ‘My client is demanding the images because he disagrees with the [prosecution service’s] sentencing demand against T, which states that he only threatened him with a weapon,’ Aachboun wrote. ‘My client wishes to increase the sentencing demand against T. from threats to attempted murder using the integral images.’

The trial of Tanis is expected to begin in March. A court has already decided on the basis of psychiatric reports that he has low mental capacity, a personality disorder with narcissistic traits and diminished responsibility.
