Car drivers in Leiden had to put up with the longest delays in Dutch traffic last year, according to an analysis by satnav maker TomTom.

On average, drivers in Leiden spent 30% longer on their journeys because of heavy traffic and in rush hour a 30 minute journey took an average of 48 minutes, TomTom said.

The finds come from the latest edition of the TomTom Traffic Index, which measures traffic delays worldwide, based on information from 600 million satnav systems.

Next on the Dutch ranking is The Hague, where delays and jams boost travel time by 28%, followed by Haarlem and Nijmegen, both on 27%. In Amsterdam and Arnhem journeys take 26% more time than they should.

Leiden comes in 75th place in the European ranking and 131st world wide.

Mumbai is the most congested city in the world and locals there can expect to spend an extra 65% extra travel time stuck in traffic.
