Dutch employers organisations VNO-NCW and MKB-Nederland said in a statement it is ‘fortunate’ that the Conservatives have a clear majority, which allows the Brexit process to move on. But the organisations said they ‘are concerned about the approach the British government will take’ to the trade treaty negotiations with the EU.

While hoping for a speedy agreement, the organisations said it is more important to make sure there is a ‘good agreement than a fast agreement.’

‘Delay is an option up to the end of 2022. The EU must do everything to avoid a no deal in 2020,’ the two organisations said.

Dutch anti-EU campaigners have also been quick to seize on the British vote as a driver for Dutch withdrawal from the EU. Thierry Baudet’s nationalist and pro-Nexit Forum voor Democratie described Johnson’s win as magnificent.

Anti-Europe campaigner Geert Wilders was also quick to jump on the Nexit bandwagon. ‘Great news. Brexit has been confirmed. Europe has lost a member and more will follow,’ he said on Twitter.
