Amsterdam football club Ajax has extended its contract with head coach Erik ten Hag by two years until mid 2022.

‘I am extremely happy,’ Ten Haag said on the club website. ‘We have had a fantastic year and we want to build on it. We work together well, at all levels within the club. This style of football suits Ajax and it suits me.’

Ten Hag was appointed to the job in January 2018 and took the club to second place in the league behind PSV that season.

This season Ajax took the league title for the first time in five years and the KNVB Cup for the first time in nine years. The club also drew praise from around Europe for the way they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Preparations for next season begin on Friday, when the players will first be back on the training pitch.
