A man alleged to have murdered his former girlfriend, a trainee nurse from Utrecht, should be jailed for 18 years followed by compulsory psychiatric treatment, the public prosecution department has told judges.

Laura Korsman was fond stabbed to death in her student home on July 11 last year. Police say she had at least 30 wounds on her body.

Two weeks before her death she had made a police complaint about being stalked by Zamir M after he had forced his way into her building, punctured her bike tyres and made a nuisance of himself at her job.

Police had given her an alarm button as protection.

On the night of Laura’s death, M accessed her home via the balcony after tricking her neighbours. He has admitted waiting for Laura to come home from a concert at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, wearing plastic gloves and holding a knife.

Claims that he was under the influence of drugs at the time have been dismissed by the prosecution as a ‘strategic statement’.

Argument

M has given conflicting statements about what happened, but told the court on Tuesday Laura had come at him with a knife after the two had an argument.

The public prosecutor said there was no sign of a struggle at the young woman’s apartment and that she had little in the way of defensive wounds.

Experts at the Pieter Baan clinic where M was sent for assessment said the 32-year-old has a narcissistic personality and believes himself to be the victim.

The court will rule on the case later this month.
