Firefighters are working to free two people from a light aircraft that crashed into a tree on a military airfield in Hilversum.

The single-engine plane came down on the Van Oudheusdenkazerne at around 12.50pm on Monday. It came to rest in the branches of a tree about 10 metres above the ground.

The GooiVecht fire crew reported that the two occupants were conscious and able to respond. The aircraft was leaking fuel but not on fire.

A spokesman told AD.nl: ‘The rescue operation is now under way. First the aircraft needs to be well secured, then the occupants can be released.’

Update 15.45: The two occupants – an instructor and pupil – have been freed from the aircraft and taken to hospital for checks. They were apparently practicising emergency techniques at the time of the accident.
