Are your green fingers failing you, or have you had enough of the Russian vine taking over your garden? Rather than dump them in the bin, you can now take them to an asylum for neglected and unwanted plants which has just opened its doors in Zeist.

Too many plants are ending up in compost heaps or are simply thrown away, Laurence Duquesnoy, initiator of the green asylum told local news platform Regio Online.

‘Not only animals and people deserve a second chance, plant do too. It hurts me to see what people are discarding simply because the plants are getting too big or are in the way. Re-use is sustainable and someone else may be very happy to give them a home,’ she said.

People can take plants to the asylum or turn up and choose a few new ones to take home. ‘And we have a cargo bike people can borrow if they have no transport,’ Duqesnoy said.

The plant asylum is only welcoming garden plants at the moment but if the initiative is a success it will be making space to receive unwanted house plants as well.
