Local elections 2018: GroenLinks wants to join 100 council coalitions
Left wing green party GroenLinks aims to be part of the local government coalitions in 100 towns and cities nationwide after the March 21 vote.
Party leader Jesse Klaver also told the party’s congress in Rotterdam on Sunday that he predicts the party will be the biggest in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Nijmegen. GroenLinks is taking part in 230 local votes.
In Rotterdam, Klaver, said, the party could come second and help form a ‘progressive’ council executive without populist parties Leefbaar Rotterdam and the PVV. The port city is currently run by a D66, Leefbaar, Christian Democrat alliance.
In last year’s national election, GroenLinks won 14 seats in the 150 seat parliament, up from four in 2012. Klaver opted out of joining the national government coalition because of disagreements over refugees.
