There will be a walk-in opportunity for Amsterdammers to pay their respects to the city’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan, who died last week, at the Concertgebouw on Friday, the city council has announced.

The building will be open from 10am to 8pm and mourners will be able to file past the mayor’s coffin and say farewell, the city said

The city has also opened an online condolence book where the city’s international community can share their thoughts.

On Saturday there will be a memorial service at the Concertgebouw for invited guests. The actual funeral ceremony will take place in private.

The city has cancelled all its own events and festivities until the funeral takes place and flags all over the city are at half mast. The city has also opted not to fly the rainbow flag on Wednesday – officially ‘coming out day’ – out of respect for the mayor.

This decision has let to some criticism from campaigners, given that the mayor was an outspoken supporter of gay rights.

‘What would Eberhard do?’ asked one person on Twitter, to which another posted a picture of the mayor and his wife hanging the rainbow flag on his official residence on the Herengracht.
