Five Dutch restaurants have been awarded Michelin stars for the first time, but the Netherlands was unable to add to its pair of three-star establishments in the new edition of the French guide.

De Librije in Zwolle and Restaurant De Leest in Vaassen, Gelderland, remain the only two restaurants to earn the highest Michelin accolade, meaning they are deemed ‘worthy of a special journey’.

The 2016 ratings were announced at a ceremony in Amsterdam’s De La Mar Theatre on Monday. Restaurant Tribeca was the most eyecatching newcomer, winning two Michelin stars just four months after opening its doors in Heeze, near Eindhoven.

Amsterdam supplied three of the new one-star eateries – Bolenius, Rijks (in the Rijksmuseum) and Mos Amsterdam – but the capital once again missed out on the top honour. Cucina del Mondo in Heerlen, Limburg, and Noble in Den Bosch were also awarded a star.

Several restaurants dropped off the list after closing in 2016, while La Rive in Amsterdam and Seinpost in Scheveningen also lost their single stars.

Chateau Neercanne, in Maastricht, was awarded a crystal trophy for its unbroken run of 60 years in the guide. ‘There are only a handful of restaurants in the world that have achieved this,’ said Michelin’s international director Michael Ellis.
