Breast cancer charity refuses cash from nude student calendar

The Pink Ribbon breast cancer foundation has refused to accept money donated by a group of male students who produced a nude calendar to raise funds, RTL Nieuws reported on Thursday.

The four students decided to pose for the calendar after one of their mother’s died of breast cancer, the broadcaster said. But the Pink Ribbon charity has told them it does not want the cash because it does not meet their guidelines for donations.

Links to alcohol and tobacco are banned, and Pink Ribbon does not want to be associated with nudity either because this could be difficult for breast cancer patients, RTL said.

‘One patient might not have a problem, but another might object,’ the spokeswoman said. ‘That is sufficient reason for us not to cooperate [with the project].’

The students are all members of a rowing fraternity and the photographs involve strategically placed boats and oars.

The students are not angry but do find the charity’s reasoning odd. ‘Pink Ribbon does work together with [lingerie brand] Hunkemöller,’ one pointed out to RTL. ‘They say we should not sexualize an unsexy illness, so why do they have Hunkemöller on board?… but it is up to them, and we respect their decision.’

The calendars, which have not yet been printed, will be offered for sale via a specially-set up webshop. The students are now looking for an alternative charity to donate the money to.
